Most AI-in-education products being marketed today are built for environments where bandwidth, devices and electricity are abundant. In the classrooms we serve across Nigeria and the wider African continent, that assumption breaks within five minutes of deployment. Connectivity is intermittent. Power is unreliable. Shared devices are the norm. Yet the appetite for AI-assisted learning is enormous.

PrimeAIDE, our AI-enabled education platform, was built around a different premise: offline-first as default, online as enhancement. This article shares the design principles we have validated across pilot deployments.

Principle 1: The classroom is the unit, not the device

In high-resource environments, edtech assumes one device per student. In our deployments, the realistic unit is one classroom, a teacher, a shared screen or projector, and a small number of student devices. Designing for the classroom unit changes everything: UX, content packaging, assessment, and teacher tooling.

Principle 2: Curriculum-aligned, not curriculum-adjacent

Generic AI tutors trained on western syllabi do not align with NERDC (Nigeria) or other national curricula. We invest deliberately in curriculum mapping, primary, junior secondary and senior secondary, so that every interaction reinforces what is examinable, not what is interesting in isolation.

This matters for adoption. Teachers will not deploy a tool that distracts from WAEC, NECO or BECE preparation. They will deploy a tool that makes their class more likely to pass.

Principle 3: Offline inference, online improvement

AI inference happens locally on a teacher device or classroom hub, no round-trip to the cloud during a lesson. When connectivity is available, the system synchronises updates, telemetry and content packs. When it is not, the lesson continues uninterrupted.

This split between offline runtime and online improvement is technically demanding but pedagogically essential. It is the single biggest predictor of whether an edtech deployment survives past the pilot.

Principle 4: The teacher is the protagonist

We have seen too many edtech products try to replace the teacher. They fail. The products that succeed amplify the teacher, surfacing student misconceptions, generating differentiated practice, automating drudge work like marking, and freeing the teacher for the high-leverage work only they can do.

Principle 5: Power and devices are part of the design

We do not pretend the infrastructure question is somebody else's problem. PrimeAIDE deployments include a hardware reference design, solar-powered classroom hubs, ruggedised tablets, and a maintenance pathway, because a software-only edtech intervention fails in environments where the power goes out for six hours a day.

In closing

Offline-first AI in education is not a downgrade of the high-resource design. It is a different design altogether, one that treats connectivity, power and devices as variables to engineer around, not assumptions to take for granted. Done right, it is also one of the highest-leverage interventions in any emerging-market education system.
